Considerations When Adding a Backyard Pond

When you are considering a backyard pond, one thing you need to consider is what the pond will be used for.

A backyard pond can make a great addition to any landscape. These ponds can add a touch of life and natural beauty to your garden or your backyard. Ponds also provide you with a great opportunity to learn about the ecology, however, there are a few things you should know before undertaking a project like a backyard pond.

When you are considering a backyard pond, one thing you need to consider is what the pond will be used for. Will your pond have fish and plants in it? Will your pond have a fountain or waterfall in it? If your pond will have life in it, the needs of that pond will be far different from a pond that does not have nay living things.

If your pond will not have plants or fish in it, caring for it will be a little easier. If you are interested in a fountain or waterfall, this is especially true. Fountains and waterfalls tend to aerate water quite a bit. Because these items create a very turbulent environment for both fish and plants, it is difficult for both of these things to thrive. If you are planning a pond with no plants or fish, you will have more freedom with things like fountains or a waterfall or a mechanical filter.

If you would like to add life to your pond by adding either fish or plants, or both, you will have many things to consider. The plants will need the proper amounts of sunlight, fertilizer and soil. The fish will need to have the plants with which they can co-exist.

Anacharis grass, water hyacinths and water lettuce are all good plants for providing food and removing fish waste. You will also need to maintain the proper PH and bacterial levels of the water by adding the correct water treatment chemicals and a biological filter. Be sure to do some research when considering adding life to your pond.
