The Health of Your Koi Fish

Like all living creatures, pond fish require that certain conditions in their environments be met in order to sustain their health in the pond.

In order for the fish to thrive, the water in the pond has to be reasonably clean and free from all chemical agents. Before you add any new water to the pond, you need to be sure that it is treated with chlorine/chloramines remover. The PH level of the pond needs to be at reasonable limits.

The biological pond filter has to be effective in order to eliminate ammonia and nitrates. Another thing that needs to happen in order for the fish to thrive is that adequate aeration should be provided, either by a foundation or a waterfall. When these conditions are met, pond fish usually remain healthy.

Health problems can be introduced into the pond because new fish have been added to the pond, or because conditions in the pond are less than ideal. Good medications have been developed specifically for Koi and other pond fish that will treat most of the ailments the fish may encounter.

You must be careful to be sure that dosage requirements are observed. Almost daily, new medications are being developed to treat everything from fungus to parasites as well as bacterial infections in fish. It is often the case that pond fish medications mentioned in books are out dated or have been replaced with more effective treatments. Several books are available online that can be ordered with the click of a mouse to help you to diagnose any problems with your fish.

Some pond fish, such as Golden Orfe, are more sensitive to medications and must sometimes be separated before the medications are added to the garden pond. When you use some medications, you will need to disconnect the filter.

Always read the instructions on the medication thoroughly before administering the drugs. When using medications for pond fish, you need to read all of the instructions as well as all of the precautions.
