Heron Deterrent's
Heron are probably the
largest threat to your Koi and other pond fish.
Many different manufacturers have been
working for several years to create a product
that was easy to use and install and would
actually deter herons. A product like this is
now on the market.
Animals are naturally startled by the
combination of a quick noise, sudden movement,
and water. Usually they will not only leave
immediately, they will make a note not to
return. There is a device called the scarecrow
designed to have just such an impact on the
heron. This is a humane was to deal with this
predator. Not only is this method very
effective, it is also much more preferable than
the poisons and odors associated with other
types of methods currently on the market.
Many different wildlife and environmental
experts have already endorsed the scarecrow. Not
only will this method work better than the
alternatives, it is much less expensive.
The key to the scarecrows effectiveness is its
combination of effects which have lasting impact
on predators. These effects can include water
spray, a sudden and unexpected noise, and
movement. This location will be immediately
associated by the predator with these unpleasant
things.
The predator will soon avoid the area entirely
in order not to experience these effects. Humans
will typically be surprised and back away, while
animal predators are likely to take the threat
much more seriously and get further away for
longer periods of time.
Animals and other predators will be unable to
determine the exact cause of the motion and
noise. This, along with its sudden nature, will
automatically trigger its fight or flight
survival mechanism.
Having the scarecrow in place all day long,
every day, is another reason why it is so
effective. It will blend right into the
environment, a big improvement over a person or
other device that is obviously out of place.
Predators are bound to get the message that this
is an unpleasant place to stay. The amount of
water that is sprayed is enough to make it both
surprising and unpleasant.
