Important Tips for Installing a Pond
Prior
to installing an in ground pond your first step
should be to contact your local utilities
companies and have any phone, cable, electric,
or gas lines that are buried in your yard
marked.
You will want to avoid these areas when
digging for your new pond. This is an important
step as cutting through one of these lines could
be very dangerous. It could also irritate your
entire neighborhood by turning off the power for
several blocks.
Whether your electrical pumps will operated
through a transformer or conventional circuit,
they will need to be connected the main
electrical supply. A ground fault circuit
interrupter (GFCI) and a circuit breaker must be
used in order to protect the pump system. The
power will be automatically cut off by the GFCI
should there be a short in the system or any
other type of damage.
Check all of your switches and cable connectors
and be sure that they have been approved for
outdoor use. Never use those that are not for
outdoor applications. You will need to use a
conduit to protect any cables which have not
been approved for underground use. Always use
waterproof connectors to attach your cables, and
if at all possible connect them above the water
level. All equipment, including the pumps,
should be in the off position prior to being
installed and handled.
The amount of digging you are physically able to
accomplish is an important consideration when
designing your water garden. Make sure your
plans are realistic to what you can actually
accomplish. Installing a pond by yourself is not
something that should be done by someone with
significant health problems, including heart and
back issues.
