Natural or Wildlife Ponds Offer Many Unique
Benefits
Nature
and wildlife pools are becoming more and more
popular as people gain a greater awareness of
the natural environment and want to encourage it
within their own garden space.
These pools are a great tool for improving
your gardens overall ecosystem as well as
providing an excellent educational and
entertaining experience for your whole family.
Frogs and toads will actually feel invited into
your garden with just the simple addition of a
pond. The great part about have toads and frogs
is that they will eat slugs. Adding a pond will
also surely encourage the arrival of several
different types of birds that you many not have
ever noticed in your area before.
Sufficient planting areas will be needed in
order to ensure a good balance in your pool. The
plants areas that you build into your pool
should be able to support enough plants so that
eventually two thirds of your pool’s surface
will be covered.
Koi and Orfe should probably not be added into
these types of pools, although they will be able
to support some types of fish. Any fish that are
added should be slowing added over time and as
the plants in your pond have an opportunity to
grow and mature.
While the water may appear murky at first it
will begin to clear over time as natural helpful
bacteria grow which are able to remove any toxin
left by fish and rotting organic waste. This
change will be in part due to the growth of your
plant material. This process is often slow,
sometimes taking as long as 18 months to happen.
The end result will be well worth the wait as
your garden hosts a grand display of natural
wildlife and healthy thriving plants.
Most of these natural ponds will not require the
use of a filtration system. Sometimes, however,
it is helpful to add a pump to maintain healthy
oxygen levels. A pump will also help the natural
and healthy balance of healthy bacteria that is
needed to keep your pond in excellent condition.
A pump is also a great way to keep pond water
from stagnating.
